I received the following email on February 5, 2020:
Good morning,
I’m writing to you in light of the inclusion of many public properties and historic districts in the Florida Panhandle/northwest Florida region on the National Register of Historic Places and want to let you know about a fully funded grant program that may be of interest.
At the William G. Pomeroy Foundation, located in Syracuse, NY, one of our main initiatives is helping people celebrate their community’s history through our signage grant programs. Since 2005, when my father Bill Pomeroy established the Foundation, we’ve funded nearly 1,000 markers and plaques. One of our signage programs commemorates public and municipal properties & districts on the National Register of Historic Places. As you know, the Register is the official national list of historic sites worthy of preservation, but earning that designation doesn’t come with funding for a commemorative marker or plaque. That’s where our National Register Signage Grant Program fills the gap and helps pay tribute to these important sites at no cost to the grant recipient.
I invite you to apply for new roadside markers or plaques recognizing your placements on the National Register. It’s a straightforward application process:
1. Create an account online at www.wgpfoundation.org/apply-for-grant/
2. Fill out a short grant application.
3. Upload or mail in a copy of your official designation letter from the National Register. We can help confirm placement on the Register if necessary.
4. Upload or mail in a permission letter from the landowner of property where the plaque or marker will be installed.
5. The grant award covers the entire cost of the marker, pole, and shipping. Grant recipients are responsible for installation.
Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or visit our website to view examples of our signage and to apply: wgpfoundation.org. Join our growing National Register program, with over 275 markers and plaques in 11 states and counting, including at locations such as the Woodstock Music Festival, Mt. Van Hoevenberg Olympic Bobsled Run at Lake Placid and along New York State’s historic Erie Canal. Check out our Marker Map to see all of our marker locations!
We look forward to hearing from you and helping to commemorate your National Register Places.
Sincerely,
Deryn
